Willow
Salix spp.

Anywhere around water, you’ll find plants of the Willow family. They can be small bushes or twenty-foot trees. Native Americans called the Willow “Tar-Ha-San.” They used its branches for support poles for their Tule houses, and strips of its bark to make baskets.

The blossoms on the male tree, called catkins, (cat’s tail) are soft, furry bits of fluff. At first they are gray, but soon they are covered in yellow pollen. On the female tree they are less showy.
