Aphelocoma californica

In the fall, the Scrub Jay’s diet is mostly acorns. They bury extra acorns, one at a time, to store for the winter. Scientists say the jays remember where they hid the acorns. They will even dig up acorns and bury them somewhere else if they think another jay has discovered them.

Jays also eat insects. They have been seen hopping around on the head of a deer, eating parasites. The deer can’t scratch its ears like a dog scratches fleas, so it will stand still and let the jay eat the pesky insects.
