Not all seaweed (algae) is brownish or green. The group of algae called Red Algae has red pigments that cover up the green chlorophyll in them. A lot of the Red Algaes have a sparkly, rubbery texture and a brilliant red or purple color. This one has the look of a Turkish towel, but not the soft feel of one.

Red Algae contains a seaweed gum called carrageenan. It is used to make ice cream smooth. It is also added to pasta, pet food and toothpaste.
