The roots of the Tule are
always covered with water, so the plant needs a way to get air (oxygen) to
the roots. It traps oxygen in its stems and sends it to the roots. If you
cut open the stem of the Tule, you’ll see a spongy texture with lots of air
pockets, that looks like styrofoam. In fact, the Tule has so much air
trapped in its stems that it floats. |
