If you see a dark black cloud just offshore, it could be Sooty Shearwaters. They are among the most abundant bird species in the world, numbering about 20 million. They spend most of their life on the open ocean, skimming over the surface of the water. They travel close together and feed on small fish and crustaceans. Shearwaters migrate to the California coast all the way across the Pacific Ocean from their nesting areas in New Zealand. |
