Ringneck Snake

Diadophis punctatus

Ringnecks are found in moist soil under flat rocks and logs or behind the loose bark of trees. Can you see how this snake has coiled its tail into a tight ball, showing the orange underside? It does that to try to look big and bad when it senses danger from a predator, like a hawk.

This snake eats small frogs, salamanders, lizards and snakes. It also eats worms, slugs and insects. It is not considered dangerous to humans.
