Brown Garden Snail Helix aspersa |

|
The snail belongs to a group of animals called gastropod, a word that means its mouth is part of its foot. As the snail moves forward on its long foot, its mouth scrapes bits of leaves and flowers from a plant into its stomach. At the same time, the snail slimes the plant with a gooey mucus that comes from its foot. That slime makes it easy to slide along without getting hurt by sharp edges of rocks and thorns. Snails are eaten by snakes, frogs, turtles and birds. The Brown Garden Snail is not a native. It was brought here from Europe. |
