The Sand Crab lives in a place where wind and waves pound the shore all day, constantly changing the habitat. This is called the "Swash Zone." As the swash zone moves up and down the beach with the tide, so do the crabs. To feed, the crabs burrow backwards into the sand. As a wave passes over them they use featherlike antennae to filter out plankton for their food. They can gather food several times during one wave. Sand Crabs are eaten by fishes, sea birds and shore birds.
