Salamanders have moist skin instead of scales like lizards have. They breathe through their skin, and must keep it moist, so they live in damp soil under leaves and in decaying logs. They are nocturnal, meaning that they come out mostly at night.

Unlike most salamanders, the Slender Salamander has forward-pointing eyes. That helps it to judge distances well, and makes it very accurate in catching small insects. Salamanders also eat earthworms, slugs, snails, sowbugs and spiders.
