     This rose grows wild, usually near water, and has a smaller bloom than the roses that grow in gardens. It smells very good. Its leaves are made up of 5 to 7 toothed leaflets.
     Instead of large thorns like garden roses have, the California Rose has smaller, hooked thorns all over its stems. This protects the plant from being eaten, and makes the Wild Rose bush into a safe place where small animals and birds can hide from predators like cats and raccoons.
