Wild Radish

Raphanus sativus

Photo @Patricia McQuade

The radish we eat in our salads comes from this family of plants. Wild radish grows as high as 4 feet, in thick bunches, in vacant lots and along fences or roads. It has a seed pod that looks like a short, swollen string bean.

This plant does not need insects to carry pollen. It pollinates itself. Because it grows so fast it can take over a field and crowd out less hardy plants. Wild radish is the home for Orb Weaver Spiders and Cabbage Butterflies.
