Sea Urchins are protected from some predators by a hard round shell that has hundreds of spines coming out of it. In between the spines are the feet it uses to move, breathe, and hold on to rocks. On the bottom side is its mouth. Sea Urchins love to eat kelp, cutting it right off at the bottom, where it is fastened to a rock. That could wipe out the kelp forest. But sea otters, crabs and sunflower stars eat many, many Sea Urchins a day. That helps to save the kelp forest. |
