Pickleweed

Salicornia virginica

Pickleweed grows in saltwater marshes. Most plants need fresh water to live, just like people. They would be poisoned by salty water. But Pickleweed grows well there. It is able to remove the salt and store it in the tips of its stems. Those tips turn red and fall off, taking the salt with them.

Pickleweed is helpful to us because its roots hold onto the mud of the marsh it grows in, keeping it from washing into the ocean. It also provides a good home to birds and insects.
