Look at one of the long, blistered leaves on this plant. Does it look a little like a tongue? Ox-tongue has prickly hairs on its stems and leaves that make it stick to your clothes like velcro.

This plant is invasive. It pushes out the grasses and wildflowers that used to grow on our hillsides. In late summer, its yellow blooms turn to thistle. Goldfinches use the thistle to make their nests, and they chew up the Ox-tongue seeds to feed to their chicks.
