Great Horned Owl
Bubo virginianus

Although it is called a Horned Owl, this owl doesn’t have horns. Those feathers sticking up on its head are called ear tufts. But they are not ears either, just feathers. The owl’s ear holes are on the sides of its head, right behind its eyes.
The Great Horned Owl is also called a hoot owl. When you hear the hoo-hoo hoooo hoo-hoo sound of an owl on TV, this is the one you’re hearing.
This owl eats everything: squirrels, snakes, ducks, raccoons and cats. It even eats other owls and large hawks like the Red-tailed Hawk.
