Northern Kelp Crab Pugettia producta |

Kelp crabs climb on the kelp with their long jointed legs and pointy claws, so they are also called "spider crabs." They are eaten by gulls, fishes, other crabs, octupuses and sea otters. To avoid being eaten, their first defense is to hide, and their dull green coloring helps. But if they are threatened, they show their long claws and red underside. When they do that, they look like vicious predators, but actually, they mostly just eat kelp, and sometimes barnacles and mussels. |
