Northern Elephant Seal

    The male’s large snout gives this animal its name.
     Elephant seals are the largest of all the seals, as long as 15 feet. They weigh as much as 5,000 pounds, about the weight of two trucks. They spend most of their life in the ocean, and come onto the beach only 2 times each year. In December they come ashore to give birth and mate. In the summer they come ashore to molt (lose their skin and hair).
     Elephant seals can dive deeper than 5,000 feet and can stay under water as long as 80 minutes.
