Monarch Danaus plexippus |
In the spring, Monarch Butterflies leave California and Mexico to go to their summer home in Canada. When they are traveling to Canada, Monarchs lay eggs on milkweed plants along the way. When the eggs become caterpillars, the caterpillars eat the milkweed. The milkweed makes their body taste bad to birds. They taste so bad that most birds won’t eat them. Even after the caterpillars become Monarch butterflies, they still have that awful milkweed taste to protect them from birds. |
