Miner's Lettuce is usually found in moist, shady spots in the woods. It dries up and turns red in the hot summer. During the Gold Rush, miners used to eat the leaves of this plant because it is full of Vitamin C, which helps prevent a disease known as scurvy.

Here is the unusual feature that makes Miner's Lettuce so easy to identify: The stem seems to be growing up through the middle of a large, circular leaf. (It's actually two leaves grown together).
