Belted Kingfisher

    The Kingfisher dives into the water from high up to catch a fish. Unlike most birds, the female is more colorful than the male, with a band of orange on the breast.

    The Kingfisher has a strange idea about how to make a nest. It digs a tunnel 3 to 8 feet long, straight into the side of a river bank. Both the male and the female dig the tunnel. One digs with its bill, and the other sweeps out the soil with its feet. At the end of the tunnel they dig out a larger, round space. This is where they will raise their chicks in safety.
