The Great Blue is over 4 feet tall, with a wingspan of almost 6 feet. It wades in shallow water, waiting for fish and frogs to come near, grabbing them with lightning speed. If you see a Great Blue Heron on grass, it might be hunting gophers. When you get too close to this bird, it will let out an angry squawk and fly away. It can skim very close to the water, all the way across a lake, with very little wing-flapping. It flies with its neck tucked in tight, and its legs sticking out behind. |
