Gopher Snake Pituophis melanoleucus |

Gopher Snakes are "constrictors." That means they kill their prey by wrapping around it and squeezing it to death. They eat mice, gophers, ground squirrels, birds and lizards. They are eaten by hawks, foxes and coyotes. Gopher Snakes are not poisonous, but people often kill them because they look a lot like Rattlesnakes. It is not smart to kill any snake, because they help control rodent populations. |
