Sweet Fennel

Walking along the shoreline of the wetlands, you might notice a pleasant smell in the air. Look for a bright yellow-green, feathery plant with flowers in the shape of an umbrella. It smells like licorice.

This plant was brought to California long ago by the Spanish Missionaries. They planted it along the road as they traveled from one mission to the next. Some people like it because it smells good and attracts butterflies. Others think it’s a pesky weed.
