Duck Weed Lemna spp. |

When pond water is coated in green, you might think it’s algae. But look closer. It might be Duck Weed, also called Pond Weed. It’s the world’s smallest wildflower. Its leaves are built like tiny rubber rafts, made up of many air pockets, so they float. Ducks and frogs think it is delicious to eat. Like most plants, Duck Weed grows new plants from seeds. But it can also clone a new plant from a piece of leaf. Most plants can’t do this. The photo at left shows how this tiny plant looks under a microscope. |
