Plants produce the oxygen that we breathe. About half of the earth’s oxygen is produced by ocean plants like this Diatom. Most of these are microscopic one-celled plants that float around near the water’s surface so they can have plenty of sunlight. They are called Phytoplankton, and this Diatom is one of those plants. You can see its green chlorophyll. Sometimes there is so much phytoplankton near the surface of the ocean that you can see the green color from a satellite. |
