Deer mice live in all habitats, from deserts and mountains to wetlands. They are a food source for nearly every bird and mammal predator, like ground squirrels, hawks, owls, coyotes and snakes. Instead of burrowing into the ground, they build their nests in tree cavities, rotting logs and piles of debris. Their favorite food is the larva of moths and butterflies. Some of those larva are harmful to trees, so the deer mouse is helpful to us. They also eat seeds, which they gather and store for the winter. |
