Long-billed Curlew Numenius americanus |

|
The Long-billed Curlew is the largest shorebird in North America. It has a bill that is nearly as long as its body. With its long bill, the curlew pokes into the mud flats to catch insects, worms and burrowing spiders that other shorebirds can’t reach. The bill is curved down and has a soft, sensitive place on the end which helps it feel its prey deep in the mud. It is the Curlew’s call, not the shape of its bill, that gives it its name. It calls cur-lee, cur-lew. |
