Double-crested Cormorants are found at the ocean and in lakes. They swim underwater, catching fish in their expandable throat pouches. Most water birds preen their feathers with oil from an oil gland on their body, to keep the feathers waterproof. Cormorants don’t have that gland. The lack of oil actually makes for better underwater swimming. But that means they often have to stand around on the rocks, holding out their wings to dry, when they get waterlogged. |
