Photo ©Patricia McQuade	In freshwater marshes, Cattails are at the center of things. Ducks build their nests in them. Songbirds perch on them to announce their territory, and eat the seeds. Caterpillars munch on the leaves. The brown, velvety flower of this plant looks like a corn-dog. Its seeds make a fluffy white down covering that the early settlers gathered for stuffing their pillows. Native Americans called Cattails “Ha-le.” They used the leaves for weaving baskets, and cooked the roots like potatoes.
