California Towhee

The California Towhee is a large sparrow, almost as large as a Robin. You’ll often see it running along on the ground, where it blends in perfectly because it’s just plain brown, with almost no markings.

Once a Towhee finds a good place to live, it stays there for life. The male Towhee is aggressive, and will attack other males to protect his territory. He will even attack his own reflection in the hubcap of a car.

Habitat: Shady underbrush, open woods, pinion juniper woodlands, and suburban gardens.
Feeding:
Eats insects, weed seeds, and grains.  Will come to birdfeeders for seed mixes.
Nesting:
Builds nests of twigs, grasses, plant stems, leaves, placed on ground or in foliage up to 12 ft. high.
Eggs: 2-6, light blue with dark marks. Incubation: 11 days. Fledge: 8 days.
