Botta's Pocket Gopher |
The Pocket Gopher gets its name from the pockets in its cheeks (outside in the fur, not inside its mouth) that it uses for carrying food and nesting materials. It has large claws and huge front teeth for digging underground. But the most unusual thing is this: Its lips can close behind its teeth, so no dirt gets into its mouth when digging. Gophers eat plants, mostly the roots. Gophers are preyed upon by many, many animals, like hawks, owls, coyotes, skunks, great blue herons, and even snakes. |
