Beach Hoppers are also called sand fleas, but they are not fleas, and not even insects. They are crustaceans. They mostly hide in their burrows during the day, since they are a favorite food for shorebirds and sand beetles. At night they come out to feed on rotting kelp. Animals who feed on dead things are called decomposers. Decomposers are important, because dead things need to be broken down and returned to the earth so they can provide nutrients for living things. |
