Acorn Woodpeckers mostly eat insects, but they also like acorns. If you were a woodpecker, how would you store your acorns so that scrub jays and squirrels couldn’t steal them? You could punch holes in tree trunks, and wedge the acorns into the holes. Then, you could get all your family and friends together, and share the acorns, and take turns guarding them. That’s how Acorn Woodpeckers like to live -- in communities where everybody helps everybody, to find food and raise the chicks and defend the nests. |
